The Shoe That Grows extends protection from jiggers

In late September, our partner Swahiba Networks distributed 716 pairs of The Shoe That Grows at Siaya Nyasidhi Primary School, located on the northern side of Lake Victoria in Western Kenya. This distribution was paired with a jiggers treatment clinic.

Jiggers is an infestation of sand fleas typically in the feet that can easily become infected, painful and debilitating. Jiggers is common in Western Kenya and can especially affect children, who often walk long distances to school barefoot, resulting in poor school attendance. Cases of jiggers can be significantly reduced by wearing shoes.

Swahiba pairs jiggers clinics with distributions of The Shoe That Grows so kids can get treatment and stay healthy longer, protected from reinfection, injury, other parasites and soil-borne diseases.

The Shoe That Grows meets an immediate need by protecting health—and doing so longer than any other shoe—which removes a barrier to education. When kids are healthy they can take advantage of all their educational opportunities, which is a key factor in breaking the cycle of poverty.
